So I finally managed to watch YJHD.
The movie which was on every movie-buff’s must-watch list because it marked the coming back of Ayan Mukerji (AM) after his awesome debut venture ‘Wake up Sid’ and that of ex-flames Ranbir and Deepika. The movie erratically starts with Ranbir Kapoor (Bunny- an intern with a travel channel) interviewing a sex-worker followed by the much talked about song ‘Ghagra’ by Madhuri Dixit Nene. While I enjoyed the whole song, the way it was pictured etc, I was still thinking of the logic behind an item song being in the first five minutes of the movie.
The main story starts with a ‘First Bencher’ girl (Naina- Deepika Padukone) realizing that she is not enjoying life like her other friends because her mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) thinks that ‘Jawaan ladki zyada enjoy karti hai toh pregnant ho jaati hai’ (Like Really? How lame!). So Naina decides to take a life-changing holiday with Bunny, Aditi (Kalki Koechlin), Avi (Arjun Roy Kapoor). The trip indeed changes lives for all 4 of them.
Naina is studious (she actually reads a big-fat book on neuroimmunology, while on a trek to manali!), bespectacled; she doesn’t drink, smoke and has never been kissed. Bunny is a reckless charmer who flirts seamlessly. Love blossoms, for her at least, but they must part and then reunite in the foreground of a ‘over-hyped’ destination wedding of Aditi. This sounds like DDLJ na? (A mainline newspaper rightly called this movie a modern day DDLJ…Now you know why!!?!)
In all, YJHD may not be as suave and heart-warming as AM’s first creation; nonetheless, it is definitely a one-time watch, with lot of loose ends. We could definitely have more of veteran actors like Dolly Ahluwalia and Farooq Sheikh (Bunny’s Dad) in the movie.
Watch it for Deepika Padukone’s sexy innocence, Ranbir’s passion and charm and cute moments of buddy hood among the four lead actors.
Leaving you with some amusing dialogues from the movie… “Jawaan ladki zyada enjoy karti hai toh pregnant ho jaati hai”, “Shaadi dal chawal jaisi hai…thoda kheema pao, tangdi murgi aur Hakka noodles toh zaroori hai”, “Tujhe aise jagaho pe marungi ki dawai bhi nahi lagao payega”, “Iski maa ka lara”, “Venice toh Europe ka dharavi hai”, “Kya sahi faulty piece hai”….
