Trailer Review: Begum Jaan – Vidya Balan Is Fierce. And I Mean It in Every Sense of the Word!

It’s been quite some time that I’ve written anything in the ‘Movies’ section of the blog. Last evening I stumbled upon the trailer of Srijit Mukherji’s Begum Jaan going viral on social media. And all I can say is, Vidya Balan is back!

Vidya Balan is back!

Vidya Balan is back!

The engaging trailer starts with the voice-over of Amitabh Bachchan taking you to the partition period where India and Pakistan are drawing their borders.Unfortunately the India-Pakistan border has to pass through this dynamic & no-nonsense madam – Vidya Balan’s brothel – one part in India and other in Pakistan. The inhabitants are warned by the administrators to vacate the premises, but Begum and her gang of girls decide to fight the system and not vacate the house. This leads to tragic and violent consequences.

While the overall film’s treatment is decidedly melodramatic, Vidya Balan looks completely in-charge of her character as she delivers one strong dialogue after the other. Remember ‘Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment!’?

Gauhar Khan - Gorgeously unrecognizable!

Gauhar Khan – Gorgeously unrecognizable!

With a super promising star-cast that includes Naseeruddin Shah, Chunky Pandey, Rajit Kapur, Ashish Vidyarthi, Gauahar Khan and Ila Arun, the trailer reveals a lot about the film and how the film is all set to become one of 2017’s blockbusters and one of Vidya Balan’s bests. Begum Jaan is a Hindi adaptation of director Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film Rajkahini, and is produced by Vishesh Films.

It is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 14, 2017 – Ek mahine ka time hai. Sirf ek mahina!
